Taking Leadership to the Next Level: UN Peace Operations 2020
A Challenges Forum Workshop was hosted by the United States Army War College Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute in partnership with the Geneva Centre for Security Policy – Center for Creative Leadership, at the United States Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 28 February – 1 March, 2017.
The Workshop in Carlisle served as the first, foundational, Workshop in the Challenges Forum Work Strand with the overall aim of strengthening leadership in United Nations Peace Operations. On the overall theme Taking Leadership to the Next Level: UN Peace Operations 2020 Panels and Break-out Sessions were built around the why, the what, and the how of leading UN peace operations:
- Why is good leadership so critical for successful peace operations and what difference can it make?- What is good leadership and what is required to better select, prepare, support and evaluate Senior Leaders, Mission Leadership Teams, and Middle Management pre- deployment and in–mission?
- Stock-take of United Nations current policy, guidance, reviews, capacity-building, pre-deployment preparations and evaluation tools for mission leadership – the How.

The Workshop included broad participation from Challenges Forum Partners, including the United Nations Executive Office of the Secretary-General and the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations, Field Support and Political Affairs. Day 1 and Day 2 of the Workshop included discussions in Break-out Sessions. Participants were asked to deconstruct mission leadership and elicit what capacities, skills, competencies and persona are required to lead effectively, and also to reflect on how to better ensure that this is instilled in those in a position of leading UN peace operations. A Summary Report covering the conclusions of the Workshop will be published here in the near future.
