Virtual Challenges Annual Forum 2020: Framing Peace Operations in a Changing Global Landscape
How can we sustain effective peace operations and strengthen collective engagement and political support to improve peace operations? This was the theme for the 13th Challenges Annual Forum, held virtually from Stockholm.
The on-going Covid-19 pandemic was not only framing the timely discussions, with the pandemic’s risk of undoing decades of peace and development dividends. It also made it impossible to meet physically, resulting in the Partnership’s first virtual forum – VCAF20.
This year’s virtual concept enabled having three co-hosting Partners:
the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in South Africa,
the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
Three dialogue strands
The key objective of the Annual Forum is to provide Challenges Forum’s partners and key stakeholders with a forum for discussion, generating concrete recommendations for development and reforms of peace operations. VCAF20 offered five days of meetings, where the participants engaged in discussions on three themes/dialogue strands:
1) AU-UN Partnership in Peace Operations
2) Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace in Peace Operations
3) Performance and effectiveness of Peace Operations
Using the digital event and conference platform ‘Whova’ provided the participants direct access to the streamed sessions, while offering a social platform for networking and virtual discussions, as well as background material and videos.
