Challenges of Change: The Nature of Peace Operations in the 21st Century and the Continuing Need for Reform
The 13th seminar in the Challenges series was entitled “Challenges of Change: The Nature of Peace Operations in the 21st Century and the Continuing Need for Reform”. The seminar was hosted in Ankara 18-21 November 2003 by the Center for Strategic Research of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in co-operation with the General Directorate of Security (National Police Force) and the University of Bilkent.
The nature of crisis situations in the world has been changing in the past few years, and is continuing to change, as are the capabilities and attitudes of Member States. Such developments mean that United Nations peace operations themselves have to keep up with the times and reflect these changes.
Valuable contributions to the conference were presented of the many distinguished speakers drawing from previous experiences from relevant case studies in order to identify how governments of United Nations Member States with differing resources and capabilities can best respond and support United Nations peace operations. Participants visited the Turkish General Staff PfP Training Center in Ankara and discussed views on peace operations training.
